Winter in Auckland doesn't dump snow on us, but it still plays havoc with your hair. The cold air outside, the heated air inside, hotter showers, fewer days in the sun - it all adds up to hair that feels drier, flatter and more brittle than it did in summer. If you've noticed more static, more breakage, or that your colour has gone dull since the weather turned, you're not imagining it.
At Little Garage, I've been looking after heads of hair through more than 20 Auckland winters. The good news? A few small changes to your routine can keep your hair soft, shiny and strong right through to spring. Here's how to winter-proof your hair.
Your hair and scalp both rely on moisture to stay healthy. In winter, moisture disappears fast thanks to:
All of this leaves the hair cuticle rough and porous, which is why winter hair catches on jumpers, looks dull under indoor lighting and tangles more easily. Asian and mixed hair types can be especially prone to this because the cuticle is naturally thicker and takes longer to absorb moisture once it's been lost.
If you've been using a clarifying or volumising shampoo all summer, swap it out for something more hydrating from May through August. Look for ingredients like argan oil, shea butter, glycerin or ceramides on the label.
A few simple rules that make a big difference:
If your ends feel like straw by July, step up to a bond-repair treatment. We stock salon-grade options at the salon and can match one to your hair type.
Most of us blow-dry more in winter because walking out the door with wet hair in 8 degrees is miserable. That's fine, but the heat adds up fast. A good heat protectant isn't optional in winter, it's non-negotiable.
Quick hot tool rules:
Wool, acrylic and polyester all create friction against your hair. That's what causes the halo of static when you pull your beanie off in the office. A few tricks to tame it:
Winter dandruff and itchy scalp are more common than people think. The combination of dry indoor air, hot showers and less fresh blood flow to the scalp (because we're not sweating as much) leaves the skin tight and flaky.
Your scalp is skin, so treat it like skin:
Winter is actually the hardest season on salon colour, even though the UV is lower. Porous, dry hair fades faster because the cuticle can't hold the colour molecules as tightly. If you're running balayage, blonde or a vivid fashion shade, book a gloss or toner every 4 to 6 weeks through winter. It takes 30 minutes, refreshes the tone and seals the cuticle at the same time.
Between salon visits, use a colour-safe shampoo and avoid anything with sulfates in the top three ingredients. If you're blonde, our purple shampoo guide will help you keep brassy tones at bay.
If you only remember five things from this post, make it these:
